Dr. Peterson received a B.S. degree in nuclear medicine in 1981 from Ferris State University, a Masters degree in radiological physics from the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor), and a Ph.D. in epidemiology and biostatistics from the University of Texas - Health Science Center at Houston in 1993.   From 1986-1995, Dr. Peterson served as space Shuttle mission radiation specialist at the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center, National Aeronautics and Space Administration.  Dr. Peterson was an associate professor at Baylor College of Medicine from 1995-2006, where he was supported by research grants from NIH, NASA, and the Office of Naval Research.  Since 2006, he has been with the Center for Biostatistics, The Methodist Hospital Research Institute (Houston).  In 2009 Dr. Peterson was appointed Associate Professor of Public Health, Weill Medical College, Cornell University. 
Machine learning algorithms developed include text mining via concept clustering, n-grams text mining, Gaussian mixture models, self-organizing maps (SOM), crisp c-means (CCM) cluster, fuzzy c-means (FCM), cluster quality (Davies-Bouldin, Dunn's, Hubert's indeces), hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), principal components analysis (PCA), k-nearest neighbor (kNN), naive Bayes classifiers (NBC), linear discriminant analysis (LDA), quadratic discriminant analysis (QDA), Fisher's discriminant analysis (FDA), logistic regression (LOG), polytomous logistic regression (PLOG), artificial neural networks (ANN), learning vector quantization (LVQ), gradient descent L1 soft norm support vector machines (SVM), least-squares support vector machines, SVM based on radial basis function networks (RBF), RBF kernel regression, particle swarm intelligence (PSO), neural gas (NG), random forests(RF), and genetic algorithms (GA).  Sub-optimal feature selection with parametric and non-parametric best ranked N (Gini diversity, information gain, t-test, Mann-Whitney, F-test, Kruskal-Wallis), sequential forward floating (SFF), and optimal search using evolutionary programming based on genetic algorithms (GA).  Performance assessment using confusion matrices, k-fold cross validation, bootstrapping, boosting, and ensemble techniques including sum, product, deterministic and random linear oracle.  Biostatistical algorithms developed to date include summary statistics, simulation of correlated variables, gray-codes, covariance analysis, Pearson and Spearman correlation, matched (paired) 2-sample t-tests, independent 2-sample t-tests, F-ratio tests for ANOVA, non-parametric 2-sample Mann-Whitney and k-sample Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA, PCA with Varimax orthogonal rotation, linear regression, Poisson regression, unconditional logistic regression, conditional logistic regression, polytomous (polychotomous) logistic regression, linear categorical regression, Cox proportional hazards regression, Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, word frequency computation, cellular automata, intermittency using scaled factorial moments.
Data fusion and integration, machine learning and computational intelligence approaches to association, function approximation, unsupervised class discovery, supervised class prediction, algorithm performance, intermittency, and Monte Carlo uncertainty analysis.   Biomedical research interests include genomic classification, miRNA target searching in UTR, expression analysis, medical informatics, while clinical interests include prostate and renal cancer.

BibTexPubMedMiner BibTexPubMedMiner is a program for LaTeX that searches PubMed for articles based on a search term, and creates a checklist of titles found.   The user then checks the desired papers, and then processes the output text with citations as well as citations in BibTex or the bibliography environment.  It was developed mostly for computer scienctist who use LaTeX for IEEE-format papers that include PubMed citations from the biomedical literature. 

mulogit
mulogit is a Stata program that performs univariate and multivariate logisitc modeling and plots the odds ratios and their 95% confidence intervals on separate plots. 

ChipST2C  ChipST2C is a Win XP computer software package which identifies statistically differentially expressed DNA-microarray based genes among k independent samples.  The statistical tests employed are the parametric t-test and non-parametric Mann-Whitney U test when there are k=2 samples, and the parametric F-test or non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis test for k>2 samples.  All four tests (i.e., t, M-W, F, and K-W) can be carried out as a permutation-based randomization test or without randomization.  In addition, either a "within-gene" permutation or "between-gene" permutation scheme can be specified.  Also, for the multiple testing problem, ChipST2C generates Bonferroni adjustments to p-values, the Benjamini & Hochberg false discovery rate (FDR) method, or positive false discovery rate (pFDR) method reflected in Storey q-values.  Significant genes are then displayed automatically in cluster images using agglomeration and distance function specified by the user.  In addition, significant genes and their test results are sorted by either p-value or test statistic and written to disk in the form of Excel .csv files.   The user can also perform a k-means cluster analysis of all of the genes in a single cluster or genes with q-values (or p-values) below a given level.  The k number of clusters can also be determined automatically or fixed by the user prior to run-time.  
BioMedStat BioMedStat is a Win XP program which perfroms summary statistics, covariance analysis, Pearson and Spearman correlation, matched (paired) 2-sample t-tests, independent 2-sample t-tests, F-ratio tests for ANOVA, non-parametric 2-sample Mann-Whitney and k-sample Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA, hierarchical cluster analysis, principal component analysis, k-means cluster analysis, linear regression, Poisson regression, unconditional logistic regression,  conditional logistic regression, polytomous (polychotomous) logistic regression, linear categorical regression, Cox proportional hazards regression, Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, Cellular automata, and word frequency computation.  BioMedStat also provides a rich graphics environment for saving and copying graph images to disk and clipboard in bitmap (bmp), emf, exif, gif, icon, jpg, memory bmp, png, tif, or wmf.   Default publication and presentations color styles are available and images can be saved to the windows clipboard and pasted in presentation packages.
